Charcoal Burning

Charcoal burning on the Quantocks

Charcoal burning was a vital industry for centuries, providing essential fuel for smelting, glassmaking, and cooking. But where exactly did this take place on the Quantocks? What evidence can help us determine when it happened and which types of wood were used?

In March 2025, a small group of volunteers, led by Dan Broadbent of the Quantock Landscape Partnership Scheme and the QHG, headed up to  Triscombe try to start to answer some of those questions.
