The Somerset HER is the go to place for records of finds for all parts of the county of Somerset (excluding Exmoor National Park).
The amount of information is vast and can seem quite intimidating but once you’ve used it a few times you‘ll get the hang of it.
One warning … you WILL spend hours looking at it!
Using data from various sources (including the Environment Agency), this site covers most of the UK with the added bonus that you can see both the LiDAR surveys and satellite imagery. It is also useful if you are out in the field as it uses GPS to locate your position.
Another site that will spend hours looking at. The Portable Antiquities Scheme is run by the British Museum and Amgueddfa Cymru - Museum Wales to encourage the recording of archaeological objects found by members of the public. Every year many thousands of archaeological objects are discovered, many of these by metal detector users, but also by people whilst out walking, gardening or going about their daily work.
The GrandFather of heritage in Somerset. The Society exists to promote the study of archaeology, natural history, local history and historic buildings with particular reference to the historic County of Somerset, and is an important point of contact for anyone with an interest in understanding and protecting the heritage of Somerset.
An amazing site who‘s aim is to gather as much information about Roman pottery finds in the UK and have it available to everyone!
A fascinating site with maps that go back to 1798 (although the oldest for Somerset is the OS 6 inch 1830). Everything from OS maps and land utilisation maps to rainfall in at the turn of the 20th century and limestone in 1955 … plus so much more!
Just because Time Team aren’t on the TV anymore doesn’t mean that they aren‘t still doing archaeology! They are still doing some fantastic digs and it‘s all on their YouTube channel!!
