For the first time in its history, the Council of British Archaeology's Festival of archaeology is coming to North Petherton!
Test pits are 1m square excavations that offer a unique, minimally invasive method for archaeologists to investigate areas not typically accessible, providing crucial insights into the development and history of our villages and towns.
We will be digging a number of these test pits around the village to see what is what evidence there is of previous occupation under our very feet. Each find that we recover will add a little piece to the historic record!
The team will have a base in the Walnut Tree hotel, in the very heart of the village, where we will be collating information from all of the pits and arranging site visits.
Over 2 days, our friends from Geoflo will be doing a couple of surveys at Parkers Field. This is a area of the village that has had very little development for centuries. All of the old maps show it as fields but has this always been the case?
The field will still be open to the public but due to the nature of the work they will be carrying out, we won't be able to get too close to the team as they are working but fear not, there will be members of the QHG on site to explain what is happening.
Join Antony as we try to uncover the reasons why North Petherton is where it is.
Who were the first settlers of the land? Why might they have chosen this location? What part has the landscape played in their decisions? Has the landscape changed?
These are some of the questions that Antony will encouraging the audience to try to answer ... because he won't have all of them!
This will be a presentation at the Walnut Tree hotel followed by a guided walk around the village then back to the Walnut Tree for a "Pull up a chair friend" chance to chat with the the QHG team.
This will be a ticketed event raising funds for the QHG at £5 per ticket but free to members of the QHG.
